This open-air museum reconstructs the emigrant experience physically — original and replica buildings from 18th- and 19th-century Ulster (a thatched cottage, a forge, a schoolhouse) lead visitors through a full-scale ship’s dockside and hold, then out into a reconstructed American frontier settlement on the other side, tracing the actual journey millions of Ulster emigrants made to North America.
Costumed interpreters staff many of the buildings, demonstrating period trades and answering questions in character — a genuinely immersive approach that goes well beyond static exhibits, particularly engaging for visitors tracing their own Ulster-American ancestry.
